Lipoedema

Understanding the Relationship With Lymphatic Health

Lipoedema is a chronic disorder that primarily affects women and is characterised by an abnormal accumulation of fat cells, typically in the lower body, including the thighs, hips, and legs, with estimates suggesting that up to 11% of the female population may suffer from some form of the disease. This means that approximately 1 in 9 Australian women may be affected by lipoedema and most do not know that the condition even exists.

Lipoedema and the Lymphatic System: What You Need to Know

At Chelsey Jean, we understand the crucial role that your lymphatic system plays in maintaining overall health. For those living with lipoedema, a chronic and often misunderstood condition, addressing lymphatic health is critical. Here, we explore the nature of lipoedema, its connection with the lymphatic system, and how you can effectively manage this condition to improve your quality of life.

What is Lipoedema?

Lipoedema is a chronic disorder that primarily affects women and is characterised by an abnormal accumulation of fat cells, typically in the lower body, including the thighs, hips, and legs, with estimates suggesting that up to 11% of the female population may suffer from some form of the disease. This means that approximately 1 in 9 Australian women may be affected by lipoedema and most do not know that the condition even exists.

This excess fat found in a lipoedema body  is largely resistant to diet and exercise, and the condition can lead to discomfort, pain, and significant quality-of-life issues. Unlike standard obesity, lipoedema affects the body’s connective tissues and is often accompanied by emotional distress, past trauma and fat shaming stigma with women.

Lipoedema and Hormonal Fluctuations

Lipoedema is often triggered or worsened by hormonal changes, particularly during puberty, pregnancy, and menopause. During these stages, fluctuations in hormones such as estrogen can cause an increase in fat storage and fluid retention, exacerbating the condition. Supporting your lymphatic system during these times is essential for managing the symptoms of lipoedema and preventing further progression. We also see that Lipodema ladies tend to be very empathic mother hens. They like to take care of others over themselves.

The Relationship Between Lipoedema and the Lymphatic System

The lymphatic system is responsible for transporting fluids, toxins, and waste products out of the body. In lipoedema, while the fat cells themselves are abnormal, lymphatic dysfunction often follows. As the condition progresses, fat accumulation impairs lymphatic drainage, leading to fluid retention and swelling, especially in the legs. This can eventually lead to lipo-lymphoedema, where lipoedema coexists with lymphoedema, further complicating the condition by adding fluid retention and more significant swelling to the already existing fat deposits.

Stages of Lipoedema and the Risk of Lymphoedema

Lipoedema progresses in stages, each marked by increasing severity:

  1. Stage 1: The skin remains smooth, but there is a noticeable increase in fatty tissue, leading to a disproportionate appearance in the lower body.
  2. Stage 2: The skin becomes uneven and starts to form indentations due to the uneven accumulation of fat.
  3. Stage 3: The fat deposits become larger and harder, with the skin starting to fold and create lobules.
  4. Stage 4 (Lipo-lymphoedema): In this final stage, the condition progresses to lipo-lymphoedema as the lymphatic system becomes overwhelmed, causing fluid retention and swelling in addition to fat accumulation.

Addressing lipoedema early and supporting lymphatic health is key to preventing the progression to lipo-lymphoedema, which is harder to manage and can lead to additional complications such as immobility and skin infections.

Surgical Options for Lipoedema

Surgery can be a life-changing option for many individuals with lipoedema, particularly in more advanced stages. The primary goal of lipoedema surgery is to remove the diseased fat tissue from affected areas, such as the arms and legs, to prevent its return. Unlike cosmetic procedures, this surgery is not designed for aesthetic fat reduction but for long-term management of the condition.

A lymphatic-sparing technique is typically used, focusing on protecting the lymphatic system during the fat removal process. This is vital for ensuring that the lymphatic system continues to function properly post-surgery, reducing the risk of complications such as lymphoedema. Most patients require 2-3 surgeries, spaced about two months apart, depending on the progression of the disease. Surgical costs can vary, and individual assessments during consultation will help tailor treatment plans based on the severity of the condition and any other health factors.

In many cases, patients experience significant relief from pain, improved mobility, and a reduction in swelling after surgery. This surgery has the potential to enhance quality of life by addressing both the physical and emotional burdens of lipoedema. For individuals considering surgical options, it is essential to consult with a trained specialist to explore whether this approach is suitable for their specific condition.

There are typically 3 types of patients we see:

Those who are already diagnosed with Lipoedema
These patients have often been living with the condition for years and are familiar with the unique challenges it brings, such as swelling, pain, and fat accumulation in the lower body. Our approach for these patients focuses on providing advanced treatment options as well as supporting their treatment choice of either the surgical route or the conservative management route.

Those who suspect they may have Lipoedema
These individuals notice disproportionate fat buildup and may have tried multiple diets and exercise routines without success. We provide diagnostic support, education on the condition, and a personalised care plan to confirm their suspicions and guide them toward effective management strategies.

Those who have no idea they have Lipoedema
Many people come to us unaware they have lipoedema, assuming their symptoms are related to general weight gain or obesity as this is what their doctor has told them. Through gentle conversations, we help them understand the difference between lipoedema and other conditions, offering natural health advice and compassion every step of the way.

The Psychological and Social Impact of Lipoedema

Lipoedema can have a profound emotional and psychological toll on those affected. Many women experience stigmafat-shaming, and depression as they struggle with the appearance and pain of their condition. The social isolation that accompanies lipoedema can worsen the quality of life. At Chelsey Jean Lymphatics, we believe in offering holistic support, combining physical treatments with emotional care to empower individuals to take control of their health.

We partner with inspiring leaders in the Lipoedema field who just like us are all about empowering others through education and awareness.  Shell and Tiana host a podcast like no other podcast in Australia, “The Lipoedema Podcast” sets out to provide invaluable insights into this condition from two distinct perspectives. Shelley approaches lipoedema through a conservative management approach, while Tiana bravely shares her journey through surgical intervention. By sharing their stories, experiences, and knowledge, they aim to support, inform, and empower individuals dealing with this condition.

Management and Treatment of Lipoedema

***There is no current mainstream cure for lipoedema, but the condition can be managed effectively with a combination of treatments that promote lymphatic health and address the symptoms of fat accumulation. Here are the conservative management strategies we recommend:

At-Home Care:
Chelsey Jean Lymphatics offers a complete range of at-home lymphatic products designed specifically for lipoedema patients. Daily use of our lymphatic gloves, alongside our naturopathically formulated moisturiser, will help maintain lymphatic flow and reduce swelling.

Self Lymphatic Drainage (SLD):
Twice a day at-home self-body brushing following the Chelsey Jean Lymphatic Sequence to keep lymph moving is essential to stop the progression of Lipoedema. This helps push stagnant lymph, nurture healthy tissue, keep swelling reduced and keep the lymphatic detoxification pathways working the best possible way.

Pneumatic Compression Therapy: We offer our own range of high-quality affordable pneumatic compression devices designed to support lymphatic drainage, reduce stress, and increase circulation. We even have a hire-to-buy option as we believe nothing beats a 30-minute compression massage at home each day for Lipoedema ladies and we have the results to prove it. Our CJCo circulate pumps will also fit every body as we have specially designed extenders to widen the legs to any size requirement.

Targeted Supplements:
For those with lipoedema, supplements like good quality Omega-3 fatty acids, Vitamin D, NKCP,  Bioceuticals Digestive enzymes and Magnesium are crucial for reducing inflammation and supporting fat metabolism. Additionally, as lipedema is a connective tissue disorder and collagen is the basis of strong connective tissue. Include collagen each day especially when you start losing weight you’ll also want to help tighten your skin and collagen, Vitamin C and Zinc is great for that.

Hydration & Herbal Teas: Drink plenty of clean filtered water to stay hydrated and help flush out toxins from the body. Drink detoxifying herbal teas such as dandelion, burdock root, and nettle to support lymphatic and liver function.

Infrared Saunas: Use infrared saunas to promote sweating and detoxification. The gentle heat promotes sweating and blood circulation, assisting in the breakdown of fibrotic tissue, common in lipoedema.

Hydrotherapy: Alternating between hot and cold water applications stimulates lymphatic drainage and reduces aids in reducing swelling.. Techniques such as contrast showers or hot / cold compresses can help alleviate discomfort and promote lymphatic flow in the legs and arms.

Holistic Approach: Deep breathing exercises, sunlight exposure, and gentle self-care practices can boost lymphatic health. Using a lymphatic massager like Dr. Graeme’s massager,  alongside regular rest and natural sunlight (without toxic sunscreens), enhances recovery and supports the body’s energy balance.

Sleep: Restful sleep is essential for individuals with lipoedema as it supports the body’s ability to repair tissues, reduce inflammation, and maintain optimal lymphatic and metabolic function.

Exercise: Low-impact exercises such as swimming, walking, and rebounding (mini trampoline exercises) are excellent for improving lymphatic flow and reducing fat deposits. We also recommend aqua therapy to relieve pressure from the joints while stimulating the lymphatic system.

Rebounding: Light rebounding on a mini-trampoline for 10–15 minutes daily is a low-impact way to stimulate lymphatic circulation. This exercise supports lymphatic flow, improves circulation, and helps combat the stagnant lymphatic fluid often seen in lipoedema.

Anti-Inflammatory Foods:
Consuming foods high in antioxidants and anti-inflammatory properties, such as berries, leafy greens, and wild ocean fish, can help reduce inflammation. These foods support healthy lymphatic function, which is often compromised in those with lipoedema.

Essential Oils:
Using essential oils like yarrow, frankincense, cypress, and rosemary can help improve circulation and reduce inflammation. These oils can be diffused in your home or applied topically (diluted) to support lymphatic drainage and reduce swelling.

Deep Breathing: Practice deep breathing exercises to stimulate lymph flow and support immune function. Deep abdominal breathing helps move lymph fluid, energising the immune system.

Recommendations from Chelsey Jean Lymphatics

At Chelsey Jean Lymphatics, we offer a range of products and services designed to support your lymphatic health and immune system:

Lymphatic Massage: Our specialised lymphatic massage and energy cocoon sauna are just two in-clinic techniques that help stimulate lymph flow, assist detoxification, and start the healing process of toxic overload. Our staff are very friendly and compassionate, and we guarantee you will leave knowing what you can do to feel better. This specialised massage technique stimulates lymphatic flow, helping to prevent fluid buildup in lipoedema patients and reducing discomfort and swelling. This is a great way to be individually educated and leave with a good idea on what your next steps will be. We will massage your body and then enhance your treatment by adding compression therapy with the CJCo Circulate Pumps.

Compression Therapy: We are not a massive fan of 24/7 Compression garments, we prefer pneumatic compression devices like those from our CJ&CO Circulate Compression range, which support the lymphatic system by reducing swelling and promoting lymphatic drainage in a gentle but thorough 30 min session. Our pumps are designed to reduce the daily struggle with garments, ensuring comfort and efficiency.

Nutritional Guidance: We provide expert advice on maintaining a balanced diet and staying hydrated to support lymphatic function by following your personalised biocompatibility food results. Supporting gut and liver detoxification and eliminating toxins to improve neurotransmitter balance in the brain is vital for a happy, healthy life. We also have naturopathic and nutritional professional staff available for personal consultations. Our ‘Nessie’ supplement blend is also recommended. Normally we find lipoedema patients do not eat enough food, choosing to starve themselves thinking that is the best way to lose weight. This is the opposite of the truth, studies show a more keto and low inflammatory diet with 3 meals a day and no snacking is the best diet to follow.
